For centuries, cerebrovascular ischemia (stroke) has captured the interest of physicians and scientists alike. The focus of this interest is to find new ways to prevent the occurrence of and minimize the injury caused by poor blood flow to brain tissue. In 1981, the Joint Cerebrovascular Section of the AANS & CNS was created with the purpose of unifying likeminded neurosurgeons to facilitate the academic discussion of cerebrovascular disease.
